Extension Centre, Golap Borbora State Institute of Panchayat & Rural Development (GBSIPRD), Joysagar, Sivasagar

 In 1948, at Joysagar, Sivasagar, this institution was established as the “Rural Polytechnic School” for skill up gradation in rural technologies for rural youth. It was one of the pioneering and oldest centres of Assam.

In 1964, the institution was upgraded to the “Gaon Panchayat Secretary Training Centre (GPSTC)”. The main objective of this centre was to impart training to Gaon Panchayat Secretaries, who played a crucial role in implementing various rural development programmes at the grassroots level.

In 1990, the State Government of Assam upgraded the centre to the “Extension Training Centre (ETC), Joysagar, Sivasagar”, thereby expanding its training capacity to cover a wider clientele including Government officials, community-based organizations, and others.

In 2003, it was further upgraded to the “Extension Centre, State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Joysagar”, as an apex centre for research and training in rural development, with special emphasis on capacity-building of PRI members, PRI officials, line department officials, and other stakeholders engaged in rural development.

As per the Cabinet decision held on 28^th May’2025 (vide No. eCF-659063/2), the institute has been renamed as the “Extension Centre, Golap Borbora State Institute of Panchayat & Rural Development (GBSIPRD), Joysagar, Sivasagar”, under the administrative control of the Golap Borbora State Institute of Panchayat & Rural Development, Assam.
